Wednesday 16th December – bike ***** – Trimley Marshes – sunny, mild and still:)

After a run of gloomy days, it was supposed to be sunny today so I had hoped to go down the seafront for the sunrise but it was cloudy first thing so stayed in bed and things did not look promising. Luckily the sun appeared over breakfast along with blue skies, definitely my favourite colour:) Being mild with light winds it was too good a day not to head out on the bikes again, Mag suggested we take a chicken sandwich to the bird hides at Trimley Marshes which is what we did:) Leaving home around midday through Felixstowe cemetery where the bare tree branches set against the deep blue sky really lifts the soul, much better than the gloomy grey days of late! We pass the massive warehouse turning right up Blofield Lane to Cordies Lane which leads to Trimley Marshes and we hardly see anyone, just how we like it:) Stopping at the first hide, the open air one up the steps for our very yummy chicken sandwich with lashings of salty butter with fantastic views all the way to Levington Marina, sadly not much wildlife, just a few gulls and pigeons with a solitary egret! Well rested we carry on to the hide at the winter flood, with a huge flock of lapwings overhead. The shovellers with their large bills are feeding along with widgeons and teal with shell ducks and loads of lapwings with a solitary curlew:) we sat in the hide ages wit a cuppa before starting back. I rode along the slippery river path with lovely views of the River Orwell with the tide out and the sun glistening on the mud! Back at the docks Mags turns towards Morrisons while I head to the view point to see if there is a sunset. With a bank of cloud over Harwich the sunset was not great but with the river like a millpool and a hint of pink in the sky and a nearly full moon it was still very lovely! Back through Landguard Nature Reserve to the prom with the big moon over the sea. What a top bike ride covering over 14 miles enjoying the mild sunshine, certainly made the most of the lovely weather as its looking gloomy and grey, getting colder too, by the look of things I will be lucky to get out windsurfing again this year:(
